My houserule has always been:

Base skill points @ level 1 + INT bonus (if applicable)
= number of skills.  Player chooses that number, and those are now your class skills.

This allows for the fighter affiliated with the thieves guild to have &quot;picked up&quot; a few tricks.

Or the Wizard with a passion for clockworks, that knows mechanicals inside and out.</description>
